Members of Congress from both parties are politicizing and spreading bad information on the energy crisis resulting from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Given the acrimony in U.S. politics today, this isn't surprising, but misinformation on the real cause of high gasoline prices is a disservice to U.S. citizens. Democrats blame the oil and gas industry and Republicans blame President Joe Biden, but global market forces are the real culprit. Better understanding of the energy system, among policymakers and ordinary people, is crucial as the United States and world strive to transition to a system with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Rising U.S. gasoline prices are the result of global oil market conditions. U.S. gasoline prices reached their highest average level ever (in nominal terms) of $4.41 per gallon in March, but prices have been rising steadily since they bottomed out in April 2020. Global and U.S. oil production decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, as demand...

The pull-out of iconic western brands from Russia is gathering momentum, with Starbucks, Coca-Cola and Pepsi joining McDonald's in pausing operations in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Late on Tuesday, PepsiCo, the soft-drink and snack maker, said it was suspending all advertising in Russia and stopping the sale of its drinks brands, after a similar announcement by its rival Coca-Cola. Fast-food giant McDonald's said earlier that it will temporarily suspend operations at its 850 locations. The Chicago-based company, which owns 84% of its stores in Russia, could take a big financial hit because of the closures. In a recent regulatory filing, McDonald's said its restaurants in Russia and Ukraine contributed 9% of its annual revenue, or around $2bn. The company - which opened its first Russian branch in Pushkin Square in Moscow on 31 January 1990, when an estimated 38,000 Soviets lined up for hours to taste the Big Mac, a symbol of American capitalism - said it w...

When Anita Frawley sees the face of late husband Danny on a massive mosaic mural that will be housed at the Moorabbin home of his beloved Saints, the tears follow. "It brings tears to my eyes every time," said Frawley, whose daughters Chelsea, Danielle and Keeley selected the photo of their father. "The girls must've spent a lot of time choosing that photo. When you look at it, you see that this man has been through pain, he has empathy in his eyes and you see the vulnerability." Both state and federal politicians joined the Frawley family and members of the wider football fraternity at the unveiling of the centre named in Danny Frawley's honour.Credit:AFL Photos On Tuesday, Danny Frawley's legacy - which has increasingly centred on his mental health travails and unflinching willingness to disclose them - became brick-and-mortar concrete when his wife and two of his daughters joined a very-St Kilda crew of dignitaries for the unveiling of the "Danny...

The incident happened at around 8.30pm on Monday night, where the boy was brutally attacked and had his coat stolen by a group of around 10 young people, who then fled in the direction of Morrisons. The teenager was returning home from Manchester city centre, where he commutes daily on the train to an apprenticeship. On Monday night he was beckoned off the train by the gang and, when he did not comply, he was dragged off the carriage. They then proceeded to assault him before they ran off with his jacket. Police are investigating the incident and have appealed to the public for any information. Luckily, the boy managed to retain his mobile phone, on which he called 999 and reported what happened. Since then, however, the boy's mother, claims that nothing further has been done and contacting someone who is connected to the investigation has been impossible and she is usually met with answer phones and unhelpful online chats.
